The much-hyped movie starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes (with Jude Law as Watson and Rachel McAdams as the love interest) opened across North America on Christmas Day. Did I see it on opening day? I did not — the theatre here in Waterloo was full! Reports from preview showings were positive, and as I read Twitter tonight I’m seeing enthusiastic comments much like those ankle-deep congratulatory telegrams that are mentioned in “The Reigate Squires”. I hope to see the film soon, and I expect to enjoy it . . . but I assure you, it’s not going to change my fundamental idea of Sherlock Holmes, which is based on the original stories and the best movie screen of all: my imagination. Meanwhile.

A new edition of my Sherlock Holmes Handbook (cover, right) has been published by Dundurn Press, which published the original edition in 1993. Over these years, many Sherlockians have kindly told me that the Handbook has been one of their most essential reference books — and enjoyable reading too. But things do change, and it’s more than time for a new edition, catching up on new films and books and the advent of the Internet, which (as you may have noticed since you’re here) has spread Sherlock Holmes’s fame and Sherlockian fun even farther worldwide.
